Sustainability at Rydges Sydney Central
Our Commitment to Sustainability
We’re taking a fresh approach to a more sustainable stay in Surry Hills.
To keep nurturing our communities, local and far.
From the choices we make to the way we operate, we’re focused on doing better. Every day.
We’re building a more environmentally friendly hotel in Surry Hills, where sustainability isn’t just about the goals we set, light years away – it’s about the path we’re already on.
And at Rydges Sydney Central, we’re making it easier for our people, guests and partners to travel alongside us.
Together, the future’s bright.

How we’re choosing better at Rydges Sydney Central
Sourcing responsibly
We are choosing suppliers and products that help us reduce our environmental impact while enhancing the guest experience.
- Introduced large-format Thankyou bathroom amenities to reduce single-use plastic waste.
- Installed filtered water stations in public spaces to encourage reusable water bottles and reduce single-use plastic waste, with aluminium cans available as an alternative.
- From our dining venues to minibars, we work with suppliers from the Hunter Valley region, who share our sustainable vision where we can – fresh, local, and seasonal.
- Make in-room pens and notepads available on request, helping reduce unnecessary waste while ensuring guests still have access when needed.
- Selected Vendella DreamGreen soft furnishings, giving the equivalent of 15,000 recycled PET bottles a second life.
Together, these steps show that small, thoughtful choices – whether in sourcing, service, or day-to-day operations – can create a big difference for our planet and community.
Designing for the future
We are building sustainability into the way we update and run the hotel:
- Installed energy-efficient LED lighting throughout the property, including motion-sensor lighting in selected areas.
- Installed high-efficiency appliances during hotel upgrades.
- Use native and drought-tolerant landscaping to reduce water consumption.
- Installed energy-efficient motion-detection air conditioning within guest rooms.
- Installed water-saving fixtures, including low-flow taps and dual-flush toilets, saving thousands of litres of water each year while maintaining guest comfort.
- Installed heat pump technology to improve energy efficiency and reduce operational emissions.
- Use paperless check-in, digital business cards and digital guest information where practical to reduce printing.
Playing our part
We are responding to a changing climate, empower our people and customers to take part, and share our progress along the way. So far, we have:
- Introduced our Room Refresh program, rewarding guests with a $10 food and beverage voucher each night they choose to opt out of housekeeping, helping reduce water and energy consumption.
- Introduced dual recycling bins in every guest room, making it easier for guests to separate recyclables during their stay.
- Encourage guests to refill reusable water bottles at onsite water refill stations, helping reduce single-use packaging.
- Promote mindful travel by avoiding the purchase of heritage artefacts or products derived from rare or threatened species.
- Support the EVT Stretch Contributions program, enabling team members to contribute to trusted community and conservation partners, including The Children’s Hospital Foundation, Assistance Dogs Australia, Lifeline, WWF Australia, and Disabled Winter Sport Australia.
- We are proud partners with Border Trust, our regions local community foundation, and contribute to many local community and sporting event fundraisers by way of voucher donations.
By combining environmental initiatives with community support, we’re creating a holistic approach to sustainability, – one that values people as much as the planet.
You can help
Join us in choosing to protect our environment
We encourage our guests to choose to support sustainable tourism through the following simple actions.
- Save water and energy by joining our Room Refresh program and choosing to skip housekeeping and linen changes during your stay.
- Use energy efficiently and when leaving your room choose to make sure all lights, air conditioners and devices are switched off.
- Recycle where you can and help us reduce waste. Our hotel is committed to responsible waste management, with waste streams separated to maximise recycling and reduce landfill. We encourage all guests to dispose of rubbish thoughtfully and use the recycling facilities provided during their stay.
- Refill your reusable water bottle and bring a reusable shopping bag when exploring the local area to help reduce single-use plastics.
- Reduce your travel footprint by using public transport, walking or cycling where possible. If renting a car, consider a smaller, more fuel-efficient, hybrid or electric vehicle. Rydges Sydney Central car park provides EV charging facilities.
- Rydges Sydney Central does not sell any souvenirs but encourages guests to consider the origin of items when purchasing souvenirs while travelling and to avoid purchasing any heritage artefacts or items derived from rare or threatened species.
