Shrine of Remembrance
The Melbourne Monument was first created in 1914 to meet the needs of the grieving community after the amount of extensive lives lost in the First World War. 114,000 Victorians enlisted in the First World War. 89, 000 served aboard in a time where Australia’s did not travel. 19, 000 were killed and buried in graves far from home. The Shrine provided the place for the community to grief the loss of loved ones. It wasn’t just a place to commemorate those who had passed but a place to encourage and motivate the family members who remained at home.
It is a spectacular monument with so much history attached, you must visit the ‘Shrine of Remembrance’ when visiting Melbourne.
You must also book your Melbourne accommodation only a short tram to the Shrine. Rydges Melbourne provides the perfect location for your Melbourne hotel, centre of the city. Enjoy a meal at Locanda Restaurant & Bar with a menu designed by the Executive Chef Paul Griffiths.
