The 12 Apostles
The 12 apostles are one of the most iconic monuments of Victoria. They represent an enduring symbol of nature’s mighty and powerful beauty. Positioned off the coast of Port Campbell national park and near the Great ocean road; they consist of a collection of limestone stacks that have started to erode over 10 – 20 million years ago. All due to the harsh and extreme weather conditions from the Southern Ocean.
Gradually the soft limestone forms caves in the cliffs when they erode. It then becomes an arch which in time, collapsed leaving rock stacks as high as 50 meters. After years of erosion there are fewer than ten remaining of the 12 apostles.
There are many tour companies that will take you out to the 12 Apostles which is roughly 250 km west of Melbourne. Â Go West & Grayline tours; being the major and preferred companies that do day trips.
