Our Commitment to Sustainability
Sustainability highlights at Rydges Latimer Christchurch
At Rydges Latimer Christchurch we’re choosing better for our customers, our communities, and our planet.
Our Commitment to Sustainability
We’re taking a fresh approach to a more sustainable stay in Christchurch.
To keep nurturing our communities, local and far.
From the choices we make to the way we operate, we’re focused on doing better. Every day.
We’re building a more environmentally friendly hotel in Christchurch, where sustainability isn’t just about the goals we set, light years away – it’s about the path we’re already on.
And at Rydges Latimer Christchurch, we’re making it easier for our people, guests and partners to travel alongside us.
Together, the future’s bright.
How we're choosing better at Rydges
Sourcing responsibly
We are choosing suppliers and products that help us reduce our environmental impact while enhancing the guest experience.
- Reduced single-use plastics in a variety of ways, including:
- Bathroom amenities in refillable pump bottles
- Compostable shower caps throughout the hotel.
- Water refill stations available in our lobby.
- Takeaway coffee cups and lids made from plant-based, certified home-compostable materials.
- Replaced plastic pens with biodegradable paper-based alternatives used throughout our conference and event spaces.
- Stocked our Grab & Go snack bar with locally sourced favourites including Chia Sisters Juice, Three Boys Kombucha, Antipodes Water, Pals Vodka Mixers and New Zealand wines.
- At Bloody Mary’s Steakhouse, Brasserie & Bar, we prioritise seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and work with suppliers who share our commitment to sustainability, including:
- Locally sourced milk delivered in reusable kegs that are returned, cleaned and refilled up to 1,000 times.
- Chia Sisters natural pressed juice served from reusable kegs, eliminating up to 30 single-use containers per keg.
Designing for the future
We are building sustainability into the way we update and run the hotel.
- Installed energy-efficient LED lighting with motion sensors in smaller spaces.
- Provided six on-site electric vehicle charging stations for guests.
- Fitted all tapware with low-flow fixtures and installed dual-flush toilets to help conserve water.
- Installed high-efficiency appliances during hotel upgrades.
- Transitioned from water-cooled to air-cooled chillers to reduce water consumption.
- Monitor greenhouse gas emissions annually and work towards EVT’s Group emissions reduction targets.
- We have maximised recycling by:
- Separating cardboard and organic food waste from general waste to minimise our impact on landfill.
- Recycling bottles and cans across our food and beverage and conferencing operations, with recycling options also available to guests.
- Recycling print cartridges, batteries, computer parts and old mobile phones, helping keep hazardous materials out of landfill.
Playing our part
We’re choosing to respond to a changing climate, empower our people and customers to take part, and share our progress along the way.
- Introduced our Room Refresh program, rewarding guests with a $10 food & beverage voucher each night they choose to opt out of housekeeping, helping reduce water and energy consumption.
- Implemented a paperless check-in process, with invoices emailed directly to guests to help reduce paper consumption.
- Partnered with Backyard Honeybees to bring two beehives to the hotel. This initiative allows guests to enjoy liquid honey and honeycomb at the breakfast buffet, provided by our rooftop bees when available.
- We support the Christchurch City Mission’s Back to School Programme through Bayleys’ Plate Up for a Purpose community fundraising initiative.
- We support Full Bellies through monthly volunteering, with our team helping to pack and supply lunch items for people in need across the Christchurch community.
- We partner with Christchurch Polytechnic Institute to support education and training opportunities through accredited programmes.
- We proudly support Trees for Canterbury, a not-for-profit conservation organisation working to restore and protect Canterbury’s natural environment.
- Foster a culture of environmental stewardship through regular training, team engagement and community collaboration.
- Support the EVT Stretch Contributions program, enabling team members to donate to causes close to their hearts, including Cancer Society, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Mental Health NZ, SPCA New Zealand and Starship Foundation.
Join us in choosing to protect our environment
You can help
We encourage our guests to choose to support sustainable tourism through the following simple actions:
- Save water and energy by joining our Room Refresh program and choosing to skip housekeeping and linen changes during your stay.
- Use energy efficiently by switching off lights, air conditioning and devices when leaving your room.
- Recycle where you can and help us reduce waste. We separate cardboard, bottles, cans and organic waste to minimise what goes to landfill.
- Refill your reusable water bottle and bring a reusable shopping bag when exploring Christchurch to help reduce single-use plastics.
- Reduce your travel footprint and experience Christchurch like a local by walking, cycling, using public transport, or choosing a hybrid or electric vehicle. Six EV charging stations are available on-site.
- Travel mindfully by choosing locally made products and avoiding souvenirs derived from threatened species, heritage artefacts or culturally significant items.
