International Antarctic Centre
They say that the International Antarctic Centre is the coolest fun in Christchurch and the world’s best way to experience the Antarctic without actually going there.
Visitors journey through modern day Antarctica and learn about the human impact on the continent, the wildlife and plant systems and the Antarctic’s effect on the planet. There’s also heaps of fun with icy slides, a ‘polar plunge’ ice water challenge, a cave and an Antarctic storm. There is a magical simulated Antarctic Cruise in the 4D Extreme Theatre and an exciting ride on the all-terrain amphibious Hagglund. There are gripping stories of the Antarctic explorers in their huts and, of course, there are all the cute Little Blue Penguins.
There’s interactive fun for all ages and the Centre is open from 9:00am to 5:30pm year round. The Centre is located near the airport (just across the road) about 15 minutes drive from the CBD. Public buses stop outside the Centre and there are free Penguin Express Bus shuttles from the city that run on the hour.
